How far can a gas detector monitor?

Answer: Users often ask this question, mistakenly believing that gas detectors can detect over long distances. In reality, this is a misunderstanding. Gas detectors, especially fixed gas detectors, typically operate via diffusion. This means the gas must physically reach the sensor for detection to occur. Even if hazardous gas is nearby, it may go undetected if it does not diffuse to the sensor. A simple analogy: human olfaction is highly sensitive, capable of detecting trace gases at ppb levels in the air. However, sometimes you need to be very close to smell a gas, while other times you can detect it from afar. This depends on airflow direction and gas concentration distribution.

In the atmosphere, due to wind direction, gas near a detector might not be detected. Gas concentration decreases with distance from the leak source, so a "safe" reading at one point does not guarantee safety everywhere. There is no strict standard for detector spacing. Installation should be based on site conditions and hazard source distribution. A general guideline is one detector per 20m x 20m area or within 10-20m intervals.

What environmental conditions are required for gas detector installation?

Answer: Gas detectors have specific operating conditions, primarily humidity, temperature, and pressure. Most are suitable for standard indoor environments. However, in enclosed spaces like pipelines or chimneys, ensure the following conditions:

If conditions exceed these limits, measurement accuracy and device lifespan may be compromised. In such cases, install gas pretreatment systems to condition the gas before it reaches the sensor.

How does excessive dust affect installation?

Answer: High dust levels can clog the sensor’s gas-sensitive components, reducing detection accuracy. In dusty environments:

  1. Install dust filters.

  2. Clean sensors regularly using a dry, soft cloth.
Important: Never wash with water or wipe with alcohol/solvents.
